Bio
Allie Howell is a master’s student at the University of Washington (UW) researching subalpine meadow restoration. In addition to pursuing a graduate degree, Allie is also the research scientist for the UW Botanic Garden’s Rare Plant Care and Conservation Program (Rare Care) where she works on several ongoing research projects that inform reintroductions and habitat restoration for Washington’s rarest plants. Her previous jobs involved work at native and nonnative plant nurseries and research on salmon habitat restoration after earning a bachelor’s degree in ecology and evolution from University of California, Berkeley. In her free time, Allie enjoys gardening with native plants and baking vegan desserts.
Allie’s initial work for Rare Care involved mapping the distribution of rare alpine plant species and installing permanent vegetation monitoring plots in Olympic, North Cascades, and Mt. Rainier National Parks, which inspired her interest in climate change effects on subalpine and alpine plant communities. Allie is interested in restoration and conservation ecology research that informs sensitive species conservation and invasive species management, and helps ecosystems adapt to climate change.
