Bio
Ella Gray is a postdoctoral scholar at Oregon State University in the College of Forestry. Her work focuses on patterns of tree mortality in wet forests of the Pacific Northwest and how they are being affected by climate change. She earned her doctorate in forest ecology and management from the University of Minnesota, studying the effects of dwarf mistletoe infestations on lowland black spruce forests. She received her master’s degree in forest management from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where her thesis explored how habitat suitability for overstory tree species would change with a warming climate, prior to which she received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Reed College. In her free time, Ella enjoys reading, baking, canoeing and exploring the local forests with her dog, Kira.
Ella’s interest in forest ecology and silviculture grew out of her love for the forests themselves. Her work focuses on understanding how disturbances, both natural and anthropogenic, shape forest ecosystems and how these relationships will shift with the changing climate. Additionally, she is interested in working with managers to incorporate this knowledge into management activities, working to maintain healthy, resilient forests on the landscape.
