Jordan Ortega

2021 Research Fellow Oregon State University Faculty advisor(s): Jonathan Armstrong

Bio

Jordan Ortega grew up in the Willamette valley of Oregon. Learning about declining salmon populations as he grew up led him to obtain a bachelor’s of Fisheries and Wildlife and pursue a doctorate in fisheries science. Jordan is obsessed with fishing, camping, and snowboarding and spends most of his free time enjoying these activities.

Jordan Ortega’s research interests center on exploring unique life history adaptations within genetically and morphologically distinct adfluvial (migrate to lake to grow) salmonid populations and understanding the threats that they face, especially climate change related conservation challenges. Overall, Jordan wants to use research as a tool to educate and inspire others to protect unusually productive freshwater fisheries lost to shifted baselines (i.e., when the current generation’s standard of natural resources is much lower than previous generations who were accustomed to abundance).
