Bio
Robin Fales is a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington Department of Biology and Friday Harbor Laboratories. She is from southern California and earned her master’s degree at Cal Poly Pomona studying the community ecology and long-term change of a rare species of rockweed. In her free time, Robin enjoys baking, hiking and playing board games.
Robin is interested in understanding the responses of foundation species – habitat-forming species which have a strong role in structuring communities – to global change to inform conservation and management. Her work is often focused on habitat-forming brown algae including kelps and rockweeds. She uses a wide variety of ecological techniques to answer her questions about foundation species including community surveys, long-term monitoring, lab/field experiments and meta-analyses.
