Across the western U.S., climate change and disturbances like wildfires, drought and insect outbreaks are already reshaping ecosystems. Landscapes that are no longer able to support the vegetation they once did are transforming into different states.

Dr. Grace Molino is a postdoctoral fellow with the NW CASC, and is part of a national cohort of fellows leading regional research projects related to the future of species’ range shifts as part of the Climate Adaptation Postdoctoral (CAP) Fellows Program, run by the National Climate Adaptation Science Center.

March 1 marked World Seagrass Day, a holiday created by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of these marine plants found in shallow waters in many parts of the world, which create biologically rich underwater meadows.

What Remains After Wildfire on the Wet Westside of the Cascades?

What remains after wildfire in the typically wet forests of the northwest Cascades? The University of Washington’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences recently sat down with UW postdoctoral researcher Jenna Morris and UW professor and researcher Brian Harvey to discuss the findings of a new study exploring how westside forests are shaped by infrequent and high-severity fires.

The NW CASC will be hosting three, paid summer internships for undergraduate students at the University of Washington through the EarthLab Summer Internship Program. The NW CASC-hosted internships will be focused on climate adaptation storytelling, regional climate partnerships, and invasive species and climate change; the deadline to apply is February 17, 2026.
